Control the portion while keeping service moving
A measured pourer stops the flow at its preset portion. Sales and inventory still need their own records.
Updated October 11, 2026
At a glance
- One pourer provides one fixed measure.
- It does not record drinks or stop a second pour.
- Measure your own variance before buying equipment for the whole bar.
What you buy
Posi-Pour is the Magnuson brand. Its catalogue starts at US$4.00; confirm size, neck fit, shipping and import cost. The manufacturer describes gravity and vacuum operation with moving parts. It is a mechanical portion tool, not an electronic counter.
Theoretical bottle yield
Divide bottle millilitres by portion millilitres.
| Bottle | 30 ml | 45 ml | 60 ml |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700 ml | 23.3 | 15.6 | 11.7 |
| 750 ml | 25.0 | 16.7 | 12.5 |
| 1000 ml | 33.3 | 22.2 | 16.7 |
| 1750 ml | 58.3 | 38.9 | 29.2 |
Decimals are portion equivalents, not complete drinks. A US fluid ounce is about 29.57 ml, and 1.5 fl oz about 44.36 ml. Rounded 30/45 ml recipes are operational choices, not exact conversions.
45 ml
750 ÷ 45 = 16.7
60 ml
750 ÷ 60 = 12.5
Ingredient cost and possible revenue
Illustrative example: a 750 ml bottle costs $300. For 100 drinks, pouring 60 ml instead of a 45 ml recipe uses 1,500 ml extra: two bottles, or $600 of additional ingredient cost.
Per bottle, theoretical yield falls from 16.7 to 12.5 portion equivalents. At $120 per drink, the $500 difference is possible sales value only if those extra portions sell. It is not profit or a guaranteed saving.
Use, test and clean
Magnuson recommends wetting the cork, inserting straight and using a natural pouring movement with the bottle base raised about 45 degrees. Test with the spirit and a graduated measure: water does not provide an accurate test. Repeat pours, including with a nearly empty bottle.
The manufacturer specifies hand washing with lukewarm soapy water and a cold rinse, weekly rinsing or nightly for syrups and cordials. Avoid the dishwasher and excessively hot water.
Choose the tool and check the records
| Tool | Best fit | Record |
|---|---|---|
| Measured pourer | Repeated fixed portion | No |
| Jigger | Variable quantities | No |
| Free pour | Training and tests | No |
| Electronic | Model and integration dependent | Model dependent |
A jigger suits varying recipe quantities. A fixed pourer suits repeated measures. Validate speed and consistency with your team instead of assuming a universal ranking.
Actual use is opening stock plus receipts minus closing stock, accounting for transfers. Expected use includes recipes for sales and recorded complimentary drinks, waste and staff consumption. Compare the same period and unit. A difference calls for investigation; it does not prove theft.
See menu costing and inventory. Start with a few high-turnover bottles and compare before expanding.
Frequently asked questions
Does Posi-Pour record each drink?
No. Record sales and compare inventory separately.
How many drinks are in 750 ml?
Theoretical yield is 25 portions of 30 ml, 16.7 of 45 ml or 12.5 of 60 ml, before losses. Decimal values are portion equivalents.
