What it really costs to take a card payment
Compare the rate, the fixed charge, settlement and the work of entering the amount twice.

Reported restaurant rates
The table selects July 2026 Banxico averages by provider. These are reported contracts, not retail quotes; rental and fixed charges are outside this comparison.
| Provider | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| EVO | 1.55% | 2.27% |
| BBVA | 1.65% | 2.33% |
| Getnet | 1.79% | 2.26% |
| Banorte | 1.85% | 2.23% |
| Global Payments | 1.93% | 2.15% |
| Fiserv | 2.11% | 2.50% |
| Mercado Pago | 3.39% | 3.39% |
| Clip | 3.49% | 3.50% |
| Stripe | 3.59% | 3.59% |
Published rates are a different comparison
Mercado Pago advertises 3.5% + IVA for immediate Point availability. Clip advertises 2.99% + $1 + IVA, subject to eligibility and your account. Stripe lists Terminal at 3.6% + $3, excluding IVA, with 0.5% extra for international cards; its S710 reader is $5,199 before IVA. Confirm the in-person product and contract.
Use your own checks
Illustrative calculation: (processed amount × rate + transactions × fixed charge) × 1.16, plus applicable fixed costs. This assumes 16% IVA on the processing fee. Ask your accountant about tax treatment.
At $400,000 processed monthly, 3.5% + IVA is $16,240. A hypothetical 2.27% + IVA, with no other costs, is $10,532.80. The $5,707.20 difference is arithmetic, not a quote or guaranteed saving. Include card tips in the processed amount.
From the guest check to your bank deposit
Measure from when the guest pays the check to when the funds arrive in your bank. Money available in a payment account is a different milestone.
| Provider | Published timing | Bank-arrival conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Mercado Pago Point | Immediate in Mercado Pago balance. | An external bank requires a transfer. Immediate balance does not mean immediate bank credit; check receiving-bank arrival. |
| Clip | Immediate in Clip Cuenta. | External bank requires transfer. Direct-dispersal note: 9–20 h Mexico City; later payments move to the next day, including weekends. Listed models only; bank processing can exceed 4 h. |
| Banamex / EVO | Bank credit next business day. | Requires Banamex account and contract; confirm cutoff and calendar. |
| BBVA | Bank credit next business day. | Published restaurant offer; confirm contract conditions and cutoff. |
| Banorte | Bank credit next banking business day. | Processing and bank visibility occur on different days; confirm cutoff. |
| Fiserv | Deposit 24 business hours after successful batch close. | Published close: 20:00 central Mexico time. American Express deposits separately; ask for its timing. |
| Stripe Mexico | Initial settlement: 7 calendar days; subsequent: 3 business days. | Availability for payout, not guaranteed bank arrival. Add payout schedule and receiving-bank time; check Dashboard expected date. |
| Getnet / Global Payments | Confirm your contract. | No comparable general public timeframe verified. Ask for bank-credit timing, cutoffs and weekend handling. |
The sequence is payment → batch close, where applicable → available balance → payout or transfer → bank credit. Settlement timing may cover only part of this sequence.
Calendar example: under a next-business-day contract, a Friday payment before cutoff could reach the bank on Monday if there is no holiday. That is three calendar days between dates. After-cutoff payments can move into the next batch.
Actual lag = bank-credit timestamp minus payment timestamp. Keep the guest check, payment reference, batch and deposit together. One deposit may combine several checks and deduct fees. Compare each provider, separating normal days, weekends and first payouts; verify against the bank transaction.
Before changing terminals
Get debit, credit, international and American Express rates in writing. Ask about rental, minimum volume, refunds, disputes and weekend settlement. Provider-balance availability and arrival in your bank are different steps.
An integrated terminal receives the order amount and returns the payment result. Reconciliation then matches sales, fees and deposits. Confirm the reader, country, account and configuration for AventarIA and test payment, cancellation and refund. Agree the installation timeline after validating those requirements.
With few payments, manual recording may be sufficient. Compare time and errors against the complete cost. See bank reconciliation.
Frequently asked questions
Which terminal has the lowest fee?
It depends on your contract, card mix, fixed charges and rental. Compare total costs using your own transaction data.
Does no rental mean no commission?
No. A provider can charge per payment without charging monthly rental.
